A Major record label is a label that will demand high percentage in annual sales of records and they also have their own distribution system. For example Universal records and Polydor Records. The major record label I have chosen is Polydor Records The reason I have chosen this record label is because it is one of the biggest labels in the world with some of the biggest artists like Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, The Beatles, Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus. The headquarters of this record label is in London, England and was founded in 1924. The country of origin was Germany and its parent organisation is Universal Music Group, which is one of the biggest record labels in the world with the world’s biggest artists. The pros of a major record label is the money as major record labels have a huge financial advantage and connections as there are many media outlets to promote the record label. The cons of a major record label is the lack of attention as a major record labels will sign many new musicians and they often tend to drop many at a time which means that it then becomes very competitive. An independent record label is also known as a indie record label its a record label that operated without funding or outside a major record label. Independent record label example is Domino records. An independent record label or indie record label is a record label that operates without funding of outside of major record labels. Many artists begin their careers on an independent record label. The pros of an independent record label is the love for music as they are a small record label they will work harder for you to succeed and freedom to work with whomever they want meaning that there is no pressure that major record labels have. The cons of an independent record label is the money as the artists may not get the pay they want and they cannot distribute to a larger audience and it is disorganised this is not the case for all but some may be unorganised and get songs out late and make the artist look bad. An unsigned artist is and artist that is isn't signed by either a major record label or independent record label and has no contract. Unsigned artists are artist that are not signed by any sort of record label. The pros of being an unsigned is easier to produce your music as it is just you working on the song and you get to keep all of the money that you make and no one else gets a cut of the money and the cons of being a unsigned artist is that there is not enough financial backing for promoting your song which means revenue may be lower and another con is may not have the contacts to promote releases that major indie labels have and building contacts could take a while.

Diane Martel 1.13 Task BLocation permission: It is a legal requirement that a producer needs to get permission to use private locations, permission will sometimes be required to film in public areas. This is a simple code that can easily be resolved by asking permission. A music video example for this is in the

The first music video I am going to look at is big bumpin by Jay Z. The style of this music video is performance as Jay Z is performing to the camera with loads of girls around him. The genre of this music video is rap/ hip hop some of the conventions of rap is girls and money and in this music video they are on a huge boat that looks expensive and girls in bikinis this music video clearly shows the conventions of rap/hip hop music.Another reason that portrays the genre of rap is the fact that all of the girls are in bikinis, this gives rap a bad reputation as this means all people will think that rap portrays women as sexual objects but that doesn't happen in all rap videos. Cinematography: In this music videos there are lots of shots that make Jay z the artist look powerful and in charge an example of this is a low angle shot looking up at the artist. Mise en scene: In this music video the clothing is gold chain a white vest and the girls are wearing bikinis. The location is on a big nice boat that looks expensive which comes back to the convention of rap music which is that all rappers have lots of money. The lighting is natural as the video is based during the daytime in a sunny country which means that the song is a happy one and is not depressing. Sound: The sound of this music video is diegetic as you can see and here everything on screen and there are no use of sound effects. Editing: the cuts in his music video are quick as the song has a fast beat to it and having slow cuts will make the video look weird.A link to this music video can be found here. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Jay+z+big+bimpin The scientist Coldplay The second music video I will be looking at is the scientist by Coldplay. The style of this music video is performance as it has people riding bikes and the artist is singing to the camera. The genre of this music video is POP/ indie as it is very different to most POP songs. Cinematography: Some of the camera shots used are used to make the artist look weak and fragile they do this by using a high angle shot of the artist laying down. Mise en scene: The location of this music video seems to be round the back of a ware house and in the woods and a small part of the music video was on the streets. The clothing was very average a white t shirt jeans and trainers. The lighting is very natural as most of the music video is set outside however the lighting is also quite dark showing the audience that the song is sad. . Sound: The sound in this music video is diegetic as there are no sound effects being used. Editing: The editing in this music video is slow due to the beat of the song being very slow. A link to this music video can be found here. https://www.youtube.com/results?q=coldplay+scientist Da funk Daft Punk The third song I am going to look at is Da funk by Daft Punk. The style of this music video is narrative and is about a man with a dogs head and he is trying to fit in and feel normal. The gene of this music video is POP. Cinematography: Some of the shots used are close ups to show the dogs face as it is strange and the audience may want to see it up close. Other shots used are low angle shots to make the audience think that the man is in charge, over the shoulder shot so you can see through the mans point of view. Mise-En scene: The location seems to be around a city somewhere in America. The lighting is Natural as there are street lights keeping the street slightly bright as the music video is on the streets at night. The effect of the lighting is that it shows that the song is a positive one with the lights shining quite bright. The main charter in this music video also seems to have a boom box on him to show when this music video was set to the audience. Sound: The sound in this music video is diegetic as there are no sound sound effects and the talking is in sync with the action of the music video. Editing: The editing for this music video is very slow as the beat of the song is very slow. A link to this music video can be found here. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=da+funk+daft+punk+ Hey ya! OutKast The style of this music video is narrative as it tells a story of a band performing on stage this is how the music video also links into performance as it has people performing on stage. The genre of this music video is pop. Cinematography: The camera shots used in this music video are Mid shots of the artist singing, Over the shoulder shot so the viewer can see from the artist perspective and Establishing shot of the stage and the artist performing this is so the viewer can see from different perspectives. Mise-En Scene: The location is a stage somewhere in the UK. The props used are the piano and musical instruments. The lighting is unnatural as it is indoors on a stage and so the artist can be seen performing they must have a spotlight on the artist and the audience. The lighting is also very bright as it means that the song is avery happy and positive one. Sound: The sound of this music video is diegetic as there are no sound effects that are being used and you can hear everything you see like the screaming audience. Editing: The editing for this music video is fast due to the fast beat to the song so it cuts to shots quickly. A link to this music video can be found here. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=hey+ya+outkast+ Johnny Cash Hurt The style of this music video is performance as it has the artist playing guitar and singing to the camera. The genre of this music video is country/folk. Cinematography: The shots used are close ups to see the emotion on the artist face, Point of view shot so you are seeing through the artist eyes, establishing shot so you know where the music video is set. Mise-En Scene: The location of this music video is in the artists house but you occasionally see the artist on stage performing as a younger him this could mean that he's nostalgic about when he was younger and peforming. The props are all of the Food on the Table and the piano and the instruments. The lighting is very dark meaning that h=the artist is sad and depressed. Sound: The sound of this music video is is diegetic as it has no sound effects and you can see everything you hear. Editing: The editing for this music video is very slow due to the slow beat of the song. A link to this music video can be found here. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=hurt+johnny+cash+ The todorov theory is an idea simplified of a narrative theory while also allowing more complex interruption of films text with his theory. The five steps of todorovs theory is…
Equilibrium: Normal life. Disruption: The villain causes a problem or an interruption to the hero’s normal life. Realisation: When the charters like the hero realise the problem. Restored order: When the charters fight the problem. Equilibrium again: Normal life is back. The propps theory is the charters in a movie for example. The hero: A charter that seeks something The villain: Who opposes or actively blocks the hero’s quest The donor: Who provides an object with magical properties. The dispatcher: Who sends the hero on his quest. The false hero: The one who takes the credit from the hero. The helper: The one that helps the hero The princess: The person that falls in love with the hero. The Barthes theory of semiotic codes some of these codes are. The Hermeneutic code (HER) this is the way that the story avoids telling the truth or revealing all the facts in order to drop clues in through out to help create mystery. The Enigma/ Porairetic code (ACT) this is the way the tension is built up and the audience is left guessing what happens next. The semantic code (SEM) The semantic code points to any element in a text that suggests a particular, often additional meaning by way of connotation which the story suggests. The connotation: cultural/underlining meaning, what it symbolises. The symbolic code (SYM): This is a very similar to the semantic code, but acts at a wider level, organising semantic meanings into broader and deeper sets of meaning. This is typically done in the use of antithesis, where new meaning arises out of the opposing and conflict ideas. The Cultural code (REF) looks at the audience’s wider cultural knowledge, morality and ideology. The Levi- Stratuss Theory is argued that all narratives could be reduced down to binary opposites for example.
Bathes theory An example of this is denotation and connotation is in Christina Perris Jar of hearts ands what you see is her white dress with black marks of dirt and what this show is her being pure but a bit damaged because the dress is dirty. An example of a music video with a narrative theory is Drake find your love. The Todorov theory Equilibrium is when Drake and his girlfriend are happy and in love. The disruptions when a gang steals her and uses her as a prostitute to make money. The realisation is when Drake want to go and see her one more time after being told to leave town. The restored order is when drake fights the gang. The return to equilibrium is when Drake was killed at the end. The propps theory Hero: Is Drake trying to save his girlfriend as she has been kidnapped by a local gang that run things where drake lives and he wants to stand up to the gang and protect his girlfriend. Sidekick: The old man telling drake to leave town. we see this man right at the beginning of the video trying to help drake leave town almost like a sidekick. The villain: The gang that has kidnapped Drakes girlfriend the reason they have kidnapped Drakes girlfriend is for human trafficking but because of her looks she is kept as a slave to the leader of the gang. The prize: The prize of the music video is Drakes girlfriend. The Levi- Stratuss Theory Drake vs the gang. Drake has decided that he is going to stand up to the gang and go and get his girlfriend back by sneaking in and taking her the leaving town so they cannot catch and kill drake. Drakes girlfriend vs Drake. When drake goes to save his girlfriend he gets captured and tied up to then find out that his girlfriend is actually working with the gang and she then goes on to kill Drake. that 1.10 ESSAY ON MEANING CONVOEYED IN MUSIC VIDEOS In this essay I will be looking at two different music videos that are the same genre which is pop the two songs are Jar of hearts by Christina perri and I’ll show you by Justin Beiber. Christina perri was born August 19th 1986, she is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist she origins from Bensalem Pennsylvania U.S.A. she sings pop music. Justin Bieber was born March 1st 1994 in London, Ontario, Canada he sings pop or teen pop he is also a singer and song writer. In both of these music videos the Mise en scene is completely different as the Christina Perri music video has a very dull location of a town that seems to be very dark gloomy and depressing where as the Justin Beiber music video is set in the hills of Iceland with waterfalls etc however the lighting is very light meaning that the song is happy. In the Christina Perri video the props used is a car and houses it is a street that has phone boxes etc, there is also a smoke machine used on set to create a dark, gloomy and sad feel. However, the only props in the Justin Beiber music video are his skateboard and the crashed plane the meaning of the plan could be that he on top of his problems as he's skating over a crashed plane that could represent his problems. The lighting in the Christina Perri music video is very dark and gloomy to create a sense of sadness as the song is a sad one and wants to portray the visuals with the lyrics. In contrast to the Justin Beiber music video which uses very little lighting as it is set during the day but the lighting is bright and happy and so is the song. The costumes in the two music videos are very different for example in the Christina Perri video the costume She is wearing a white dress which represents purity but it is dirty which could mean that that purity has been taken away from her by the boy that has hurt her. Where as in the Justin Beiber music video the costume is very simple and he is just wearing trainer’s jeans a black coat and a white hoody underneath he is also wearing a lot of white which can peace and wisdom. In conclusion I can see how both of these two music videos are completely different but be the same genre of music for example the location, costume and lighting of these music videos can be completely different. Christina Perri: Jar of hearts Sound & Lyrical Interpretation: the sound is diegetic as there are no sound effects the visuals in the music video are very literal as they show a jar with a heart in it and the song is called jar of hearts. Mise-en-scene: location, lighting, props The lighting is very dark, depressing and gloomy as the lighting is trying to show the audience that it is a sad song that has sentimental value to the artist. The town where the music video is set looks abandoned showing that Christina Perri feels alone. She is wearing a white dress which represents purity but it is dirty which could mean that that purity has been taken away from her by the boy that has hurt her. The props used is a car and houses it is a street that has phone boxes ect. There is a smoke machine used on set to create a dark, gloomy and sad feel. Cinematography: Close up to show the emotion on the artists face. Long shot to show the audience what is going on. mid shots to give the audience enough information about the person in front of the camera. Wide shots of the girls dancing with the man in an aggressive way to make them look like they are fighting. Style Narrative Structure is the style of this music video as it tells the story of a woman that is hurt by a boy and wants to stop him from hurting other girls. Editing Techniques:The cuts in this music video are slow as the songs tempo is slow and the song is a sad one. There is an animation used to show the artists heart empty at the beginning but at the end the heard comes back. There is also an animation that shows smoke going from the girls mouth to the boys to show the girls heart being taken and broken. Justin Bieber: I'll show youSound & Lyrical Interpretation: The sound of this music video is diegetic as there are no added sound effects.
Mise-en-scene: location, lighting, props The clothing is trainers jeans a black coat and a white hod die underneath Justin's clothing represents him as a cool, chilled out boy as the song is quite relaxing. The lighting for this music video is natural as all of the music video is outside and lights will be unneeded on the set of the video the brightness of the lighting in this music video shows that this music video is a positive one and makes the audience fell more happy rather than depressed. The location of this music video is Iceland it seems to be in the cliffs of Iceland and around the hills and rivers around Iceland the location of the music video seems to be quite and the song never gets to loud meaning that the location is relaxing such as the song. Cinematography: Establishing sot of Iceland to show the audience where the music video is set: tracking shot following Justin around. Wide shot of Justin walking around Iceland. Long shot of Justin to give the viewer a real idea of the what is going on in the set. High angle shot to make the artist seem small. Over the shoulder shot to show the point of view of the artist. Style / Narrative Structure:The style of this music video is performance as the artist is performing to the camera and there is no real story to the music video it is just Justin walking around sitting down and running around Iceland. Editing Techniques:The beat to the song is very slow this means that the cuts in this music video will be slow because it needs to fit the slow beat of the song. Single camera technique essay Single camera is a set up of filmmaking and video production with a single camera its also known as single-camera mode of production or the portable single camera. The single camera method is used to save time by using one camera to capture the shot they want. Single camera is often used in music videos, low budget films and news inserts. In single camera the first method is one long take which is when the film is just one long take with no cuts in-between. This means that the long take must be done perfectly which could mean that they would have to film the movie, music video a few times. An example of one long take is in a band called Ok Go music video where they use a drone to track them around an area when the music video was shot, the song is called I wont let you down and the shot used is a tracking shot following them around on a little electric unicycle. Filming with single camera and one long shot has lots of positives such as is shows creativity and is different to the majority of films and music videos and catches the eye of people. For example, OK GO won Grammies for their music videos, another positive is that you can experiment with the camera using different shots and zooms, using one long take makes the video look smooth and compelling to watch and is cheap to achieve as only one camera is needed. Single camera and one long take is not perfect as it has its down sides like more planning is needed to make the music video/ film as short as possible as if one thing goes wrong they will need to reshoot everything again, it can be very time consuming of example OK GO had 60 attempts before they got the music video right, difficult to film without is looking shaky as one continuous shot must look perfect and it wouldn’t be used for programmes or films as in this way it is hard to tell a story. There is also a second method of how single camera can be used which is taking different takes to then construct together later in the end this is very similar to multi camera. This is used in film conversations as it uses over the shoulder shots. It can also be used in news inserts. The positive of the technique above is that it is easy to film different shots, used to film conversations so there are not any visible cameras in the background. The negative of this technique is it is longer to film than multi camera as you have to do different shots to make it loos visually appealing to the audience and interesting after the edit, longer editing process than filming one take but less editing than multi camera. Overall single camera is a great technique to use on music videos as it is visually appealing and eye-catching however a film is not good for using single camera technique as it is hard to a tell a story from It.
